A paradox
If the new Pope, when selected, denied the doctrine of papal infallibility, would the doctrine itself suggest that he must be right, meaning he would be wrong, meaning he would be right, and so on?

Another paradox is that the doctrine of infallibility has not existed in its present form throughout the history of the church. Its first proclamation (itself taking the now-traditional form of an infallible statement) in 1870 is thus somehow circular.
This reminds me of the Senate's rule that requires 60 votes to end debate, but was itself passed with only a simple majority.
